Questions? Contact our Civil Division at (517) 540-7648 or civildept@livgov.com
General Civil Matters include cases involving lawsuits between two or more parties seeking money damage. Claims of $25,000 or less are handled in District Court. Claims greater than $25,000 are handled in Circuit Court. However, only Circuit Court can handle cases involving equitable relief. Typically, a case may be filed either where the defendant resides, has a place of business, conducts business, or has a registered office. Sometimes, the case may also be filed where the action arose.

MI-Resolve: Resolve Disputes Online
Parties can resolve Small Claims, General Civil, or Landlord/Tenant disputes online with or without a mediator. Mediation is a process in which a neutral mediator helps parties identify a mutually acceptable solution. If the parties do not reach an agreement, your right to pursue the matter in court and to have your case heard by a Magistrate or Judge is not affected. The process is free, confidential, and available online 24/7.
