About Military Discharge Records (DD-214)
For a military veteran residing in Livingston County, it is recommended that you record your military discharge (DD-214) for safekeeping with the Livingston County Clerk’s Office. This is an important document that is usually needed for veterans’ benefits.
File Your DD-214
Bring in your original discharge (which will be immediately returned to you) and a copy will be kept in our Office.
Replace a Lost DD-214
If you reside in Livingston County and have misplaced your discharge, please contact Livingston County Veterans’ Services at (517) 546-6338.
Request Certified Copies
Military discharges are confidential. They are not public records and are not allowed to be viewed by the public. The individual (with ID) or family member with a death certificate may obtain copies.
To get a certified copy of your Military Discharge/DD-214 that has been previously recorded with our Office, follow the instructions below.
In Person:
Copies are free of charge. Please provide the following:
For individuals named on the record requesting copies:
- Valid drivers license or state ID.
For immediate family members or spouses requesting copies:
- Certified copy of a death certificate.
- Proof of relationship (birth certificate or marriage license) and valid driver’s license or state ID.
By Mail:
Please include the following:
- Written letter requesting a certified copy of your DD-214. Please sign your request.
- Copy of your valid driver license or state ID.
- Self-addressed postage paid envelope.
For immediate family members or spouses requesting copies, also include:
- Certified copy of a death certificate.
- Proof of relationship (birth certificate or marriage license) and valid driver’s license or state ID.
A certified copy of you DD-214 will be returned to you in the stamped, self-addressed envelope you provided by regular mail.
